26 May 2017 / New England, United States
In light of the recent terrorist attack in Manchester, United Kingdom, the US Coast Guard will be increasing our presence throughout the ports and waterways of Northern New England for the duration of the Memorial Day weekend. This may include increased patrols, random escorts of high-passenger vessels, and other visible deterrents. I also ask that our maritime partners remain vigilant to continually assess security risks and protect the maritime transportation system against all potential threats.
The Coast Guard currently has no specific maritime threat information regarding the Sector Northern New England port areas. However, vessel, facility, and company security officers should review their security plans to maintain awareness of possible threats and vulnerabilities, verify that security measures are in place for MARSEC Level 1 as outlined in vessel or facility security plans, and be attentive to possible weaknesses in their security programs. The security measures implemented on vessels and at facilities every day always include a number of efforts, both seen and unseen, to protect the public and are a critical part of a layered security approach.
Industry stakeholders and port partners are highly encouraged to remain alert while conducting daily operations, especially in the vicinity oflarge public gatherings throughout the holiday weekend. Members of the port community are also requested to review reporting procedures and ensure suspicious activity is reported in a timely manner to the National Response Center at 1-800-424-8802. Additional information on identifying and reporting suspicious activity can be found at http://americaswaterwaywatch.uscg.mil/home.html.
As always, if there is an immediate danger to life or property, call 911.
We will continue to actively engage with local, state, and federal government agencies, as well as the maritime community, to ensure that all port stakeholders receive timely communications and maintain the proper security posture.
