The Corinth Canal will reopen temporarily for three months from today (4 July) to accommodate summer maritime traffic, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Friday.
The waterway was closed in February 2021, after a series of landslides made it unnavigable and the authorities stopped its operation.
The restoration project has two stages. The first involves the slope relief work and the cleaning of the canal. The second stage, due to begin in autumn 2022, will involve harbor work to stabilise the base of the slopes.
According to reports, the Corinth Canal will reopen for four months in the summer of 2023, and the project is due to be completed in 2023.
