Ports raise cautionary signal as storm approaches

The ports of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to hoist distant cautionary signal no. TWO(2), due to the approach of Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Asani’ .

In its special weather bulletin issued at 0100 hours local time today (9 May), the Meteorological Department advises that Asani has moved northwestwards over West Central Bay and the adjoining Southeast Bay (near Lat. 130.0 deg. N / Long. 87.8 deg.E). At midnight last night, it was about 115lm south-southwest of Chattogram, 1045km south-southwest of Cox’s Bazar, 1070km south-southwest of Mongla and 1035 south-southwest of Payra.

It is likely to move in a northwesterly direction.

Maximum sustained wind speeds within 64km of the storm centre is about 89kph rising to 117kph in gusts/squalls, with the sea remaining high near the severe cyclone centre.
