Implementation of Merchant Shipping (Prevention of Air Pollution) (Amendment) Regulation 2021

The Merchant Shipping (Prevention of Air Pollution) (Amendment) Regulation 2021 will come into operation on 1 April 2022.

The Amendment Regulation is to give effect to the latest amendments made to Annex VI to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), 1973 under Resolution MEPC.324(75) adopted by the International Maritime Organization on 20 November 2020. The Amendment Regulation imposes new requirements in relation to the use of fuel oil for ships of 400 gross tonnage or above, whether engaged in an international voyage or a non-international voyage as defined in Merchant Shipping (Prevention of Air Pollution) Regulation (Cap. 413P).

The Amendment Regulation requires that the in-use fuel oil sampling point shall comply with the requirements set out in MARPOL Annex VI.
