The implementation of an engine marking system [is] starting from 1 March 2016. The system applies to brand new main engines for locally licensed Class I vessels as interpreted under section 2 of the Merchant Shipping (Local Vessels) (Safety and Survey) Regulation, CAP 548G.
Taken it is important to avoid main engines being replaced without trace which could endanger the operational safety of vessels, the Marine Department (MD) will implement an engine marking system by engraving an official mark of an unique set of letter-numbering combined code (the “Code”) onto each brand new main engine to be fitted on board newbuilding and existing locally licensed Class I vessels.
The “Code” begins with "LVS(M1)" plus 4-digit serial numbers in sequential order starting from "LVS(M1)0001". MD will assign a “Code” for each brand new main engine and the “Code” assigned will be engraved onto the engine during the first opportunity arising from a ship survey or inspection. Engraving the “Code” onto an engine will be carried out prior to the survey of the engine’s safety devices and be conducted in the presence of an inspector or a surveyor from the Local Vessels Safety Section of MD. Upon the completion of engine marking, MD’s inspector or surveyor will use a pencil to scratch the engraved stamp marks on a piece of paper. The pencil scratched mark paper and its 1:1 scale photocopy will be kept by MD for cross-checking during subsequent vessel inspections.
For any enquiry, please contact Local Vessels Safety Section, 23rd Floor, Harbour Building, 38 Pier Road, Central, Hong Kong (Tel. : 2852 4444 or Fax. : 2542 4679).
