Singapore, 14 March 2012 - GAC Singapore has underlined its commitment to workplace safety and health (WSH) practices with its achievement of BizSAFE Level 3 accreditation after a rigorous risk management audit.

BizSAFE is a five-step programme introduced by the Workplace Safety & Health Council (WSHC) in Singapore to help companies build their WSH capabilities and achieve quantum improvements in standards. Companies are guided through the process, which starts with top management demonstrating their commitment to a safe workplace for all and includes the development of effective risk management procedures and the implementation of a WSH Management System.

GAC Singapore is one of the first companies in the industry to be accredited, after voluntarily undergoing the programme. This highlights its belief in looking after its employees by making their health and safety a priority.

To attain the Level 3 status, GAC Singapore underwent a year of preparation which included restructuring and appointing a group of "HSSE Champions" from different departments to facilitate the action plans and implementation. The company also had to demonstrate that a sound risk management plan was in place for the assessment conducted by a Ministry of Manpower approved WSH auditor.

"The GAC Group has always been committed to Health, Security, Safety and Environment (HSSE) with a zero incident and accident goal," says Managing Director Ronald Lichtenecker. "As a maritime hub, the volume of crew and cargo transiting via Singapore is very high. Through the BizSAFE programme we implement best practices which enable us to safeguard the interests of both our people and customers, who are assured that their crew and assets are always in safe hands with GAC Singapore."

Investing in HSSE makes good business sense, according to GAC Singapore's Safety Officer Desmond Goh: "It improves productivity, enhances staff morale and makes efficient use of resources. With a strong and sound HSSE system in place that focuses on doing things the right way, GAC is able to manage contingencies and maintenance activities better, and that can only contribute to even better service delivery."
