An alert has been issued by Oman’s Civil Aviation Authority warning of expected heavy thunderstorms with hail which may cause flash floods today (29 February).

The following conditions are forecast over the governorates of North AL Batinah, AL Dhahira and AL Buraimi, gradually extending towards South Al Batihan, Myscat, Al Dakhylia, North Al Sharqiya governorates:

  • Heavy thunderstorms with hail ranging 20-50mm which may cause flash floods (Wadis).
  • Strong downdraft active winds with speed ranging 15-35 knots (28-64 km/h).
  • Sea state may rise (2-3.5 metres) along the Musandam governorate and Oman Sea coasts.
  • Reduction in horizontal visibility during thunderstorms.

The CAA urges all precautions to be taken, not to cross flash floods, avoid low lying areas and not to sail during the alert period.
