Tropical Storm Hato

Hong Kong Observatory has issued a Tropical Cyclone Warning advising that at 9am HKT today (22 August), Tropical Storm Hato was estimated to be about 650 km east-southeast of Hong Kong (near 20.5 deg. N, 120.1 deg. E) and forecast to move west-northwest at about 25 km per hour towards the coast of Guangdong, intensifying gradually.

Tropical Storm Hato moved steadily on a more westerly track across Luzon Strait this morning. According to the present forecast track, it is expected to be closest to Hong Kong tomorrow morning (Wednesday 23 August) and may skirt within 100 km of the territory.

With Hato edging closer to the coast of Guangdong, local winds will strengthen significantly tonight and tomorrow morning. The local weather will deteriorate with heavy squally showers. Seas will be rough with swells. There may be flooding in low-lying areas tomorrow morning.

The Observatory will consider issuing the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 this evening. Members of the public should take all precautions against strong winds and flooding as early as possible.
