QUOTE…
At 8 a.m., Tropical Storm Wutip was estimated to be about 710km southwest of Hong Kong (near 17.0 deg. N / 110.4 deg. E) and is forecast to move northwest at about 10km per hour in the general direction of Hainan Island and intensify gradually. It will then move towards the vicinity of Leizhou Peninsula to Beibu Wan.

Squally showers associated with Wutip are affecting the coast of Guangdong. Meanwhile, under the combined effect of broad circulation of Wutip and the ridge of high pressure over the coast of southeastern China, there will still be occasionally strong winds over parts of Hong Kong today. The Standby Signal, No.1 will remain in force for most of the day today.

Wutip will make landfall over Hainan Island tomorrow. Local winds will weaken. According to the present forecast track, Wutip will move across the western part of southern China afterwards, slightly edging closer to the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary. The squally heavy showers associated with Wutip will also affect the region. It is expected that winds may be generally strong over the territory on Saturday and at first of Sunday. The Observatory will assess tomorrow the need of issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3.
