03 Feb 2025 / Port Walcott, Australia
Tropical Cyclone Taliah is expected to intensify to a Category 3 Tropical Cyclone today, and possibly reach Category 4 intensity tomorrow (4 February) before slowly weakening from 5 February.
It is currently located near 14.5S 115.6E and moving SWWSW at 0507kt. Maximum sustained winds near the centre are estimated to be 55kt.
Taliah is expected to move WSW, passing about 380nm north of NW Cape tomorrow morning (4 February) before moving SWWSW over the eastern Indian Ocean and outside the region from 5 February.
Port Walcott will experience increasing swell over the next few days through this current spring cycle due to multiple tropical lows off the coast.
Winds in excess of 20kt in the afternoon evening are expected from 5 February.
A new long period of swell is expected to arrive between 0900-1200WST Saturday and long period swell between 0600-0900WST on Tuesday.
This will result in strong current, potential for ships to range off the berths and an increased risk of mooring lines to part.
Proper watch and good preparation will help mitigate any issues.
Masters should maintain a good watch on mooring lines. Ship's crew need to be mindful of mooring line snapback zones and the rise and fall of the tide. if assistance is required contact Ship loader or Port Walcott Base on CH14.
Vessels should call PORT WALCOTT Base on VHF 14 for assistance and to HOLD FAST. They should not try to heave lines in. There is no charge for tugs during periods of adverse weather.
