04 Apr 2018 / Bass Strait, Australia
AMSA [Australian Maritime Safety Authority] has established two temporary shipping fairways on the eastern side of the IMO-adopted Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) in Bass Strait…
…Masters should ensure their vessels navigate within the limits of the temporary fairways. Mariners are reminded of their obligation under Rule 10 of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, in particular that all vessels navigating near the terminations of TSS shall do so with particular caution.
The temporary fairways have been established to reduce the risk of collision between transiting vessels and a Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit (MODU_. The MODU will be operating in the area between the two temporary fairways, as part of an exploratory drilling campaign being undertaken by Esso Australia.
Details of the MODU’s operation location will be promulgated via navigational warnings issued by JRC Australia (https://www.amsa.gov.au/safety-navigation/navigation-systems/maritime-safety-information-database) and by the AHO through fortnightly Notices to Mariners.
