Severe weather alert

The Strait of Gibraltar is under alert and the city of Algeciras is facing power and internet outages, due to strong winds and rain. Both ports are closed, with all operations suspended until further notice. All anchorages have been emptied at both ports.

According to the Gibraltar Port Authority website (www.gibraltarport.com), a Gale Force Warning is in force from 0700 hours local time today (28 January) to 1900 hours tomorrow. Winds are expected to remain strong through the rest of the overnight period and into Thursday, with means still likely to reach 25-30 KT (45-55 kph) and frequent gusts of 35-40 KT (65-75 kph), with isolated gusts up to 45 KT (80 kph), these most likely in exposed areas.

The weather is expected to improve on Saturday, but high winds are forecast again for Monday.
