According to the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory, Standby Signal No. 1 was issued at 8:40a.m today (13 August) for Severe Typhoon Podul.
At 9am local time, Podul was estimated to be about 790 km east of Hong Kong (near 22.0 deg. N / 121.8 deg E) and forecast to move west-northwest at about 28 km per hour towards the southern part of Taiwan, then edge closer to the vicinity of southern Fujian to eastern Guangdong.
Podul is expected to move across the southern part of Taiwan today (13 August) and maintain a distance of over 400km from Hong Kong for most of the time today. Standby Signal, No. 1 will remain in force during the day today.
On the present forecast track, Podul will make landfall again over the vicinity of southern Fujian to eastern Guangdong overnight. Local winds offshore and on high ground will strengthen gradually that time.
Depending on the distance between Podul and the Pearl River Estuary, its intensity and the change in local winds, the Observatory will assess the need to issue the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 tonight (13 August) to tomorrow morning (14 August).
Podul will be closest to Hong Kong tomorrow morning, when heavy squally showers and thunderstorms will affect the territory under the influence of its rainbands.
