Severe Tropical Storm Wutip update (13 June)

13 Jun 2025 / Hong Kong

Standby Signal No. 1 remains in force for Hong Kong as Severe Tropical Storm Wutip may affect the territory.

Winds are expected to gradually strengthen generally during the day tomorrow (14th June), and up to gale force on high ground later. There will be occasional heavy squally showers.

Wutip intensified last night but took a slightly westward track away from Hong Kong. At 8 a.m. local time today, it was estimated to be about 720km southwest of Hong Kong (near 18.3 deg. N / 108.7 deg. E) and is forecast to move north or north-northwest at about 10km per hour towards the western part of Hainan Island and skirt the region.

Wutip is expected to skirt the western part of Hainan Island today and moves towards Beibu Wan to Leizhou Peninsula, maintaining a distance of over 500km from Hong Kong. On the present forecast track, it will then turn northeastwards and enter inland of western Guangdong, and will edge slightly closer to the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary over the weekend.

Winds are expected to gradually strengthen generally over the territory during the day tomorrow (14 June), and up to gale force on high ground later. There will be occasional heavy squally showers.

With the gradual weakening of Wutip over inland of southern China, local winds are expected to moderate progressively later on Sunday (15 June).

Hong Kong Observatory will assess tonight/tomorrow morning if there is a need to issue Strong Wind Signal No. 3. If it does, all oil terminals will be closed, cargo and bunker operations and tanker pilotage services will be suspended until all typhoons have passed. Rough sea conditions and heavy waves are forecast for 14-16 June.
