Safe pilot embarkation/disembarkation

22 May 2025 / Hazira, India

Adani Hazira Port Limited has issued a reminder to strictly comply with the pilot embarkation and disembarkation arrangements, as per the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and good seamanship.

Pilot ladder standing instructions are:

1. The pilot ladder should be rigged as per IMO requirements and approved by a competent authority. Certificate of ladder to be provided with other mandatory documents.

2. The pilot ladder must be secured such that the steps rest firmly against the ship’s side, providing the pilot with convenient access to the vessel after climbing not less than 5 ft (1.5 m) nor more than 30 ft (9 m). Whenever the distance to the water exceeds 30 ft (9 m), then access to the vessel must be by means of an accommodation ladder.

3. Hand holds should be prepared to ensure safe passage from the deck on to the head of embarkation ladders and vice versa. They should have a diameter (so they should be round) of not less than 32mm. No other structures should be welded with the hand holds. They should be between 0.7 and 0.8 meters apart and a minimum of 1.2 meters high.

4. Manropes should be rigged as per pilot instructions and at least 2 meters above the pilot ladder height.

5. Pilot ladder and stanchions to be free of grease and other slippery items.

6. Tripping line to be rigged, to adjust the pilot ladder, in case required.

7. For small vessels, where freeboard is less than 4.0 mtrs, pilot embarkation and disembarkation arrangement to be prepared at the break of accommodation or at the poop deck/starboard quarter.
