Rising Tide protest impact on port movements

The environmental activist group Rising Tide has organised a protest in the close vicinity of the port waters of Newcastle Harbour between 27 and 30 November.

Ship movements will cease at 17:00 hours local time on 28 November ahead of the protest.Between 09:00 and 17:00 hours on 29 and 30 November, the port will attempt movements on basis of police approval (no Cape sized vessels). There will be no night movements during this period.

Given the proximity of the protest to the shipping channel, the protest could impede the safe transit of vessels and increase the risk of untoward incidents. In response, the New South Wales state law enforcement agency, NSW Police, has planned to deploy a substantial force to monitor and control the protestors’ on-water activity to uphold the safety of vessels and ensure that port operations remain uncompromised.

Transport for NSW has enforced exclusion zones to safeguard commercial vessel movements during the protest period.

The Port Authority of New South Wales, in coordination with the NSW Police, has implemented the following control measures to facilitate the safe inbound and outbound vessel movements and to safeguard all port users:

  • Continuous heightened surveillance and monitoring of the port waters, particularly the vicinity of the port entrance.
  • Vessel movements will be limited to daylight hours from 28 November (pm) to 30 November.
  • Channel clearance will be received from NSW Police & will be communicated to the allocated Pilot by Harbour Master through VTS before any vessel movement is carried out.

Normal port movements are expected to recommence on Monday 1 December.
