As a cyclone approaches the North West Australian coast, Port Hedland remains on Cyclone Alert 1, expected to be raised to a level 2 alert during the afternoon of 16 February. There is a strong chance the port may be closed if the cyclone maintains its current track and intensity.
The ports of Port Walcott and Dampier are now also on Cyclone Watch. The local authorities are monitoring the situation and Masters and Terminals are being put on notice that there may be a requirement to close the port and clear berths / anchorages should the situation deteriorate.
Meanwhile, a second Cyclone is now in the Coral Sea off the East Coast of Australia. This weather system is still well east of the Australian coast and at this time not expected to cross to the coast, however weather effects may impact on the east coast of Australia over coming days.
The latest update from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology states:
“At 12pm AEST Thursday, severe tropical cyclone Gita, category 4, was located in the Fiji Meteorological Service area of responsibility near latitude 21.6 south and longitude 174.4 east. It is currently moving in a westerly direction at 14 km per hour and is forecast to track between Norfolk Island and Lord Howe Island during the weekend and into Monday, and is expected to remain well offshore the Queensland east coast. While the centre of the system is not expected to enter the Eastern Region, gales are possible near the far southeastern border.”
