Ports reopening after Tropical Cyclone weakens

[** UPDATE 9 February 2026 **]
Ports in West Australia are re-opening after Tropical Cyclone Mitchell weakened to a Category 1 system offshore Coral Bay.

Ashburton, Barrow Island, Cape Preston, Dampier, Onslow, Port Walcott and Varanus Island are at Stage 5 (Re-Open Port).

[** UPDATE 6 February 2026 **]
Ports in West Australia are clearing ahead of the forecast gales associated with Tropical Low 21U which is expected to move closer to the Pilbara coast over the weekend.

The Port Hedland cyclone response procedure has been activated, and the port is now at Cyclone Alert Stage 3 – Clear Port. This involves the clearing of the port of vessels from various terminals and inner anchorages in a staged and sequential manner.

At this stage, shipping operations will continue as planned. Adjustments will be made based on prevalent and expected weather conditions associated with the tropical system. The Inner Anchorage was cleared at 1800 hours yesterday (5 February). Inbound vessels are cancelled from 1300 hours today, and the last outbound vessel is for 2130 hours.

The following ports are also at Stage 3 (Clear Port): Ashburton, Barrow Island, Cape Preston, Dampier, East & Varanus Island Ports, Onslow and Port Walcott, Onslow. Inner Anchorages are now closed and vessels at the outer anchorage should preparing to depart to sea.

Tropical low 21U is located over warm waters to the west of Broome, and will move west-southwest over the weekend, remaining offshore initially but moving closer towards the west Pilbara Coast on Sunday.

Gales are expected over the southern quadrants from tonight, and are developing into a tropical cyclone early Saturday morning. Conditions are favourable for further development with the main limiting factor in intensification is land interaction. The current expectation is that it will stay far enough away from the coast in the shorter term to peak as a category 2 system.

[** UPDATE 5 February 2026 **]
The ports of Broome, Port Hedland, Port Walcott, Barrow Island, Onslow, Cape Preston and East & Varanus Island Ports are at Stage 2 (Prepare) in anticipation of the development of Tropical Low 21U.

Tropical Low 21U is currently moving to the west over the central Kimberley. It is expected to move offshore of the Kimberley coast during Friday. Once offshore, the risk of 21U developing into a tropical cyclone increases to High on Saturday. There is a high chance of increasing rain and thunderstorms along the Pilbara coast from Friday onwards.

Stage 2 (Prepare) involves regular communication and consultation between the KPA, Port Proponents, Port Services & Port Users. Operational plans and intentions of the Port Proponents, Port Services & Port Users will be discussed and evaluated against possible response scenarios.

Vessels should remain prepared for heavy weather associated with localised thunderstorms and should ensure adequate preparedness to implement contingency measures if required.

Terminals should ensure that berths and associated facilities are inspected, all loose items are secured, and appropriate precautions are taken in the event of heavy weather, including high winds.

[** 4 February 2026 **]
Port Hedland, Port Walcott, Barrow Island, Onslow, Cape Preston - East & Varanus Island Ports are at Cyclone Alert Stage 1 – Monitor, and the Port of Broome is at Cyclone ‘Watch’ for Tropical Low 21U which could develop into a tropical cyclone in the coming days.

TL 21U is over the western Northern Territory and moving towards the west. It is expected to move off west Kimberley coast on Friday and head in a west-southwest direction. TL 21U is currently forecast at a low risk of developing into a tropical cyclone on Saturday, increasing to Moderate (25%) on Sunday and Monday.

Shipping operations may continue as planned. Adjustments will be made based on prevalent and expected weather conditions associated with the tropical system.

Port Hedland’s inner anchorage is closed since yesterday (3 February) but at this stage there is no impact on shipping.
