Ports cleared for Tropical Cyclone Veronica

The Port of Dampier has been cleared due to Severe Tropical Cyclone Veronica (Category 4 system), currently located north of Dampier.

This severe tropical cyclone should initially track south to southwest today, before taking a more south to south Easterly direction on Saturday as it reaches the Pilbara coast.

Dampier is currently experiencing northerly swell which will continue to intensify as the weather system approaches the Pilbara coast. Storm surges are likely to be experienced, which may be further intensified by the spring tides. The Tropical Cyclone is forecast to bring heavy rainfall and winds in excess of 100 knots to the Port of Dampier.

The Port of Port Hedland is at Cyclone Alert Stage 3 – Clear Port. Clear Port actions commenced at 0600 hours yesterday (21 March) and the port expects to be fully cleared by 1700 hours local time today. The Port’s anchorages have been cleared of all vessels.

Port Hedland is expected to experience gale force winds from this afternoon. Squalls and thunderstorms are also expected in the area related to this system.
