Port opened after tsunami

The port of Merak has reopened after a tsunami was triggered by a combination of underwater landslides caused by the eruption of Mount Krakatoa and an abnormal tidal surge due to a new moon.

Dozens of buildings were destroyed, at least 222 people died, 843 were injured and 28 are missing after the wave hit coastal areas of South Sumatra and the western tip of Java at 21.30 hours local time on Saturday 22 December. The worst affected area was the Pandeglang region of Banten province in Java.

The port of Merak opened at 0700 hours local time this morning (24 December). No change to draft restrictions at its two terminals, approach channels or anchorage is reported. However, vessels should be alert to the possibility of floating materials around the terminals.

A high-tide warning remains in place through to 25 December. Authorities warn residents and tourists in coastal areas around the Sunda Strait to stay away from beaches.

Bad weather and high waves of 2.5-4 metres are expected in the area until Friday (28 December).

At the port of Banten, all activity has been stopped (stand-by) until further notice from the authority.
