Port Hedland cyclone alert

The Pilbara Ports Authority (PPA) has reported that the Port of Port Hedland cyclone response procedure has been activated. The Port of Port Hedland is now at Stage 1 - Monitor.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has provided an update on tropical system 08U located approximately 65 km West - North West of Wyndham. The system has recently moved in a South Westerly direction at 9 knots.

The low is expected to remain over land but close to the coast as it tracks through the Kimberley and East Pilbara towards the end of this week. There remains a possibility that the low will move off the coast sometime during late Thursday 5 or Friday 6 January and if this occurs, there is a strong possibility that the system will rapidly develop into a tropical cyclone.

Even if the low remains over land but close to the coast, the Port of Port Hedland is expected to be impacted by strong to gale-force winds and thunderstorm activity for a period of time between late morning Saturday 7 through to the morning of Sunday 8 January.

Based on the above advice from BoM, and subject to the threat of gale-force winds persisting, please note the following:

  • The intention is to move the Port to Stage 2 – Prepare from Thursday afternoon (5 January)
  • The intention is to start clearing the anchorages off large vessels from Friday morning (6 January)
  • The intention is to clear inner harbour off draft restricted vessels during high tide Friday afternoon (6 January).

The PPA will continue to monitor the BoM forecasts with the next update to be provided around 13.00 hours on Thursday 5 January.
