The low pressure system has now moved away off the New South Wales coast and ports which closed have started resuming operations as normal. At Port Kembla, normal operations started again from 1700 hours local time yesterday (22 April). In the Sydney are, Port Botany and Port Jackson re-opened from 0830 hours yesterday and now working as normal. At Newcastle, however, the situation remains largely unchanged, with flood waters and channel markers still stopping shipping. The Port Authority's Advice today (23 April) states: QUOTE... During the storm we received damage to a number of navigation aids. The first priority is the entrance approach buoy, which was moved 150 metres off station into the channel by the large swells. Now that the swell has reduced to 3 metres from Tuesday's peak of 13 metres, we can attempt to remove this buoy from the channel. Our priority is to remove the buoy as quickly and as safely as we can so that limited vessel movements can commence. The Harbour Master has declared the river in fresh due to the Hunter River flooding upstream. This will mean that movements will be restricted due to the fresh water. The Harbour Master will assess each individual vessel movement with likely restrictions and a limited start up. We have been advised that the Hunter River in the port may not reach its peak for 48 hours. ...UNQUOTE. The rail line is still closed at Hexham with trains banked up awaiting access to terminals. It is believed that terminals are still to complete loading a couple of vessels due to electrical and flooding issues, and it is possible that power may not be restored to all of the Hunter/Newcastle area until sometime on the weekend. Reports from local shippers indicate that they are implementing a Force Majeure for this storm damage delay.
