Pilotage precautions due to COVID-19

31 Mar 2020 / Tees and Hartlepool, United Kingdom

Due to the ongoing situation with regards to COVID-19, the following advice should be followed to assist in the safeguarding of vessels’ crews and Tees Bay Pilots when the vessel is under the act of pilotage…

  • Ensure that the requirements of Notice to Mariners No.19 of 2020 are adhered to.

  • Wherever possible, the route from the pilot embarkation point to the wheelhouse should be via open deck, as opposed to within enclosed spaces.

  • Ensure only essential personnel are present when accepting the Pilot and on the Bridge during the act of pilotage.

  • No handshakes.

  • Prior to the Pilot boarding, ensure the Bridge is cleaned with suitable disinfectant solution.

  • Every crew member who enters/leaves the Bridge should wash their hands thoroughly.

  • If possible, have a supply of hand sanitiser on the Bridge. Each member of the Bridge Team should use hand sanitiser frequently.

  • It is recommended not to eat on the Bridge during the act of pilotage.

  • Wherever possible, observe UK government guidelines with regards to social distancing whilst on board – this requirement should be included in the Master/Pilot Exchange.

  • Bridge to be well ventilated at all times during the act of pilotage.
