Panama Canal reduces Neopanamax draft limits

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has announced new draft restrictions for vessels transiting the Neopanamax locks.

Main changes

  • From August 26, 2026, the maximum authorized draft will be 48.0 feet (14.63m)
  • From September 3, 2026, the limit will be further reduced to 47.5 feet (14.48m)

Background

  • According to the ACP, the draft reductions support the safe and sustainable operation of the canal under current and projected water conditions.
  • The measures form part of its ongoing water management strategy and preparations for the 2026 dry season.

Impact on shipping

  • Vessel loading plans may need adjustment for transits from late August onward.
  • The ACP has not announced any reduction in daily transit capacity or booking slots.
  • Further operational measures may be introduced depending on weather and water conditions.
