07 Aug 2026 / Atlantic Ocean
Not your typical Hot Port News update, but one that highlights an initiative connected to one of the world's most important transport routes: the oceans.
As logistics partner to The Ocean Race, we're pleased to share how the event combines elite sailing with efforts to expand scientific understanding of the marine environment.
Sports and Science
Teams participating in The Ocean Race Atlantic have started deploying scientific drifting buoys before the race begins. Operating in areas where ocean data is limited, the devices drift with currents and transmit information via satellite to scientists.
The first reported deployment took place on August 5, 2026, by the DMG MORI team, followed by a deployment on August 6, 2026, by the Swiss team Embrace the Challenge. All four planned deployments are scheduled before the race start.
The expected results
The buoys' data helps researchers create a deeper understanding of ocean circulation and changes in the marine environment. The deployments form part of The Ocean Race science program, which uses the race's global reach to support ocean research.
