06 Dec 2023 / Andhra Pradesh & Tamil Nadu, India
Cyclone Michaung made landfall over Nellore in Andhra Pradesh as a super-cyclonic storm, following heavy rain in Andhra Pradesh and flooding in Chennai.
The storm made landfall on yesterday (5 December) afternoon near Bapatla between Nellore and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh, unleashing its fury to be felt in Chennai and adjoining areas of neighbouring Tamil Nadu.
Chennai came to a standstill following heavy rain and flooding, making it one of the worst affected places due to the cyclone.
Michaung has now weakened into a deep depression over central coastal Andhra Pradesh, positioned approximately 100 km north-northwest of Bapatla and 50 km southeast of Khammam, according to the Indian Meteorological Department. It is expected to further lose intensity, transforming into a depression and eventually downgrading into a well-marked low-pressure system.
The system is likely to bring rainfall in several states as it moves further northwards. The southern districts of Odisha are on alert, anticipating an increase in rainfall intensity in the next 24 hours.
Updates from ports in the affected areas are as follows:
KAKINADA
Inward movements were initially resumed at 0930 hours on 5 December but were suspended from 2330 hours due to heavy rains and strong winds. Movements were reinstated again by 0900 hours today (6 December).
Warning signal DC-3 hoisted.
VIZAG
Inward movements were initially resumed at 1400 hours on 5 December but were suspended from 1900 to 0300 hours this morning due to strong winds and sea swell. Although port operations have now normalised, intermittent cargo stoppages persist due to rain.
GANGAVARAM
Inward movements were resumed at 1400 hours yesterday. Re-berthing of the three shifted vessels is in progress. Port operations have normalized but there are intermittent cargo stoppages persist due to rain.
KRISHNAPATNAM
Port is re-berthing all shifted vessels. Pilot boarded first vessel for re-berthing around 1630 hours yesterday.
Stockyards inside the port area are flooded with rainwater and truck movements remain sluggish. Anticipating poor productivity on vessels, it may require a week’s time for normality to return.
