Major damage to port

The port of Palu in Sulawesi has suffered severe damage as a result of the large earthquakes that struck on Friday (28 September) and the tsunami that followed.

The area was rocked by two powerful earthquakes measuring 6.1 and 7.7 on the Richter scale centred near the central Sulawesi town of Donggala. The tsunami that followed hit both Donggala and Palu, the provincial capital.

According to reports, the dock at Palu is not damaged so ships can call at the port. However, there has been major damage to the infrastructure and there are now no cranes or roads serving the port. It is unclear at this stage when the port will be re-opened but it is likely to take months to restore it to functionality.

Palu Airport is only open to the military for emergency evacuation and delivery of disaster-relief materials.

The status of Mutiara port, in Donggala, is currently unclear as the area is still unreachable and communications and electricity are barely working.
