Lock closure for maintenance

The Kiel Canal Authorities have announced that the Big South Lock in Brunsbuettel will be out of operation with from 27 May 2024 until 19 July 2024, due to maintenance works.

In addition to that, the following vessels will be obliged to accept tug assistance in order to protect the Lock gates.

  • All vessels (traffic group 3 or higher) entering the Locks first have to accept tug assistance
  • All vessels (traffic group 3 or higher) entering the Locks behind the first vessel and running risk to hit the lockgate directly, have to accept tug assistance
  • All vessels (traffic group 3 or higher) entering the locks with no risk to hit the lockgate directly, tug assistance will be not compulsory
