Limited anchorage space in San Francisco Bay

Numerous factors have impacted the availability of general anchorage space for deep draft vessels in the San Francisco Bay Area. As of December 16, 2014, most of the berths in General Anchorages 8 and 9 in San Francisco Bay are occupied. The remaining 9 berths have limited depth and may not accommodate deeper draft vessels. Over the next few days, several vessels are scheduled to arrive from sea or shift from cargo terminals to anchorage berths. In the event that suitable anchorage space is not available, owners, agents and crews should be prepared to make alternate mooring arrangements or expect that the vessel will need to remain at sea until safe anchorage space becomes available within the designated San Francisco Bay anchorages as defined in 33CFR110.224. Parties are advised to plan ahead and contact the Vessel Traffic Service at (415) 399-7410 or VHF-FM Channel 12 to determine which anchorage berths may be available. Once a berth is identified, please contact the San Francisco Bar Pilots at (415) 393-0457 to determine if available berths are suitable to safely anchor your ship.
