Increased patrols reported

20 Sep 2021 / Singapore

The Singapore Shipping Association (SSA) has today (20 September) reported an increase in Malaysian and Indonesian coast guard actively patrolling and detaining vessels anchored off Tanjung Penawar (east coast of Johor, Malaysia) and Tanjung Berakit (Northeast coast of Bintan Island, Indonesia).

While the area is generally known in the industry as East OPL, it is subjected to overlapping territorial claims/jurisdiction by the Indonesian and Malaysian port authorities.

The SSA reminds the shipping community to comply with the local laws and regulations and to obtain respective authorities’ prior approval before conducting any operations in the vicinity.
