Heavy weather precautions for cargo barges & all water craft

Deendayal Port Authority has instructed that in view of severe weather conditions during the monsoon period, in addition to compliance with the Monsoon Preparedness Plan, the following precautions should also be taken by cargo barges and all water craft:

  • Masters to ensure they have a tarpaulin cover in good condition on board to cover the top of the hold during operation and passage throughout the entire monsoon period;

  • All scrapers should be kept clear and not allowed to accumulate rain water;

  • Maintain good craft/barge stability and do not overload;

  • Maintain a healthy environment on board;

  • Inform crew of need to avoid upper deck areas made dangerous by weather;

  • Rig safety lines/hand ropes where necessary;

  • Maneuvre ship to minimise risk of broaching, pooping and/or synchronous rolling;

  • Monitor weather reports;

  • Keep LSA equipment in good condition and ready to use;

  • Secure and/or check securing of:
    - all weather deck openings (doors/hatches)
    - anchors and winches
    - hatch covers, vents and any other openings to cargo holds
    cargo (as appropriate)
    - loose or movable objects in cabins & accommodation, on deck, in the engine room and in the galley
    - all ports and deadlights closed
