Expected impact of Tropical Cyclone Narelle on ports

Operations at North Queensland ports are expected to be disrupted or even cease due to Tropical Cyclone Narelle, which is forecast to reach Category 4–5 intensity as it crosses Cape York later this week. Very strong winds, heavy rainfall and dangerous sea conditions are expected.

At Cape Flattery (East Coast), impact is expected prior to and during landfall with rapid deterioration in conditions with large swell and strong winds. Port closure and suspension of marine operations is likely.

At Weipa (Gulf / West Coast), the impact is expected after the system crosses Cape York, with a risk of re-intensification in the Gulf, leading to prolonged severe conditions. Extended port closure is likely, with multi-day disruption to operations.

Advice (YELLOW) indicating a weather events likely within 24-48 hours has been issued for Weipa and Amrun urging vessels at the ports to:
- Review all cargo/trading operations and confirm vessel status (including draft)
- Place vessels on short notice to sail and confirm readiness timelines
- Liaise with Cairns VTS / Regional Harbour Master regarding sailing windows and draft limits
- Continue operations only if safe; ensure vessels maintain safe transit draft and trim
- Smaller vessels to prepare for designated cyclone moorings
- Recreational vessels to follow Extreme Weather Event Contingency Plan.

Cargo operations may continue only while conditions permit, subject to tidal constraints.

Watch and Act (ORANGE) indicating a weather event likely within 12-24 hours has been issued for Cooktown and Cape Flattery advising:
- All vessels to sail (some may already have departed due to tidal constraints). If unable to sail, implement full cyclone precautions with linesmen engaged.
- On-water authorities to prepare to depart.
- Small vessels to be fully secured in designated moorings.

Anchoring large vessels upstream is not recommended due to storm surge risk and potential stranding inland.
