Exercising safety and vigilance during festive seasons

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore has reminded the shipping and port community of the importance of exercising extra caution, navigational prudence and best practices during festive seasons.

In its Port Marine Notice No.132 of 2018, the Authority notes that festive seasons are times of increased traffic and passenger ridership in the port of Singapore, so the shipping and port community are encouraged to observe the following:
a) Exercise caution and due diligence when operating at sea;
b) Observe safe navigation practices;
c) Conduct risk assessment prior to commencement of activities. Don appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (i.e. safety helmets, goggles, gloves, shoes, harnesses, etc) where applicable;
d) Place emphasis on donning of lifejackets when working near or over the ship side and when conducting transfers between vessels;
e) Strict adherence to company’s and/or shipboard drug and alcohol policies; and
f) Strict adherence to Singapore Port Regulations and the International Regulation for the Prevention of Collision at Sea (COLREGS).
