Dredging in New Castle Range

Dredging work is underway in the New Castle Range of the Delaware River and will continue until November 15. According to the Marine Safety Information Bulletin No.36-14 issued by the U.S. Coast Guard, Sector Delaware Bay, a safety zone is established closing Pea Patch Island anchorage #5 and the upper portion of Reedy Point South anchorage #3. All vessels are prohibited from transiting or anchoring in Pea Patch Island anchorage #5 for the duration of the operation. The safety zone for Reedy Point South anchorage #3 is north of a line drawn between positions 39 33'7.5"N/75 33'2.0"W and 39 33'8.8"N/75 32'31.8"W, as charted on NOAA chart 12311. Vessels transiting to or from the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal should transit through this area to avoid interfering with the dredge ESSEX and all related dredge equipment. The dredge ESSEX is operating in New Castle Range, working from north to south in the channel, starting in the vicinity of Killcohook National Wildlife Refuge. Mariners are cautioned to remain a safe distance away from the dredge, buoys, cables, pipeline, barges, derricks, wires, and related equipment. Submerged pipeline will be placed to facilitate dredging. Monitor VHF channel 16 for information on the pipe-laying operation. Traffic should call the dredge ESSEX at least 30 minutes prior to passage. The dredge ESSEX will monitor VHF channels 13 and 16. Mariners are urged to use extreme caution and operate at minimum steerage speed to reduce wake when transiting the area.
