Dredging charge to be introduced

Port Otago has announced the introduction of dredging charges, effective from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027.

Otago Harbour has one of the country’s longest port entrance channels, stretching 25km. A backhoe dredge and a trailing suction hopper dredge are used for maintenance dredging and continuous sediment management, but the latter vessel is now reaching the end of its operational life. Port Otago and Napier Port have formed a joint venture to build and purchase a replacement which will be shared between the ports.

Concurrently, navigation systems, pilotage capabilities and safety protocols must be upgraded to meet New Zealand and international standards.

The dredging levy of $0.50 per wharfage tonne discharged or loaded will apply to all bulk trades transacting in the Upper Harbour.
