The deep depression over southeast Bay of Bengal and southwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a Cyclonic Storm named ‘Montha’.
Cyclone Montha will be the first cyclone likely to make landfall over the Indian landmass this year. At 02.30 hours Indian time, the storm was about 600 km east-southeast of Chennai, 680 km south-southeast of Kakinada, 710 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam, 790 km west of Port Blair and 850 km south of Gopalpur in Odisha. It is likely to continue to move northwestwards over southwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal during the next 12 hours and then north-northwestwards and intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by morning of 28 October.
Montha is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around Kakinada on the evening/night of 28 October, with maximum sustained wind speeds of 90-100 kmph and likely gusts up to 110 kmph, as it continues its north-northwestward movement. Warnings of heavy rainfall have been issued for parts of Odisha, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Heavy rain, squally weather, and rough sea conditions are expected to prevail along India’s east coast between Odisha and Tamil Nadu for the next two days.
Port operations, vessel movements and cargo operations at Kakinada Deep Water Port and anchorage port were suspended until further notice yesterday evening (26 October). Warning flag No.2 has been hoisted.
Cargo and vessel operations at Chennai, Ennore, Kattupalli and Karaikal are unaffected so far. Vessels inside the port premises are urged to double up mooring ropes and be ready to vacate port premises, when warning alert is sounded. Warning flag No.1 has been hoisted.
At Vizag, working vessels at outer harbour berths are currently retained alongside. Cargo operations and berthing of LPG vessels have been suspended. Inner harbour navigational moments are being carried out as usual. All working vessels are advised to double mooring ropes and keep main engines ready to shift to sea at short notice. Warning flag No.2 has been hoisted.
