Coal train derailment

The Australian Rail Track Corporation has confirmed an incident on its Hunter Valley rail network at about 12.25pm last night (26 September).

Wagons from a coal train derailed and were struck by another coal train running in the opposing direction, resulting in damage to the locomotive. There has also been track damage which will require repairs. No injuries have been reported.

The incident has been reported to independent transport safety investigators and the incident site is currently quarantined.

At this time, there are no indications to when repairs will be completed and trains running again. It is also difficult to pin point which mines are affected and which vessels waiting to load coal at Newcastle may face delays as a result of the incident.
