Closure of anchorage

16 May 2025 / Port Kembla, Australia

Port Kembla VTS will close the anchorage at 1200 hours on Saturday 17 May due to the forecast wind and swell that will affect the port from a cold front that is likely to develop into a coastal low on Sunday or Monday.

All vessels at anchor must heave up and depart the anchorage before 1200 on 17 May. They are to drift more than 12 nautical miles from the coast at all times.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) and the Harbour Master have requested all vessels drifting off Port Kembla during the coming weather are to have engines running at all times and not to come any closer to the port than 12NM unless requested for pilotage.

Vessels in port may run extra lines as needed and lower sea-side anchor to the seabed. Vessels are encouraged to contact VTS if further information is required.

VTS, Pilots, and Harbour Master will continue to assess conditions to ensure the safety of the port is maintained. However, it is unlikely that the anchorage will be reopened before Thursday or Friday next week.

It is also possible that ship movements may be affected during this time.
