Civil unrest, curfew in force

The Republic of Panama is experiencing civil unrest, which began on the evening of Monday 12 March and has intensified since yesterday (13 March).

Currently, the worst affected area is Colon Province, with the epicenter at the City of Colon/Cristobal which is witnessing looting, crossfire shootings, and cargo rail theft incidents.

A curfew between 1800 and 0600 hours is in effect since yesterday. As a result, GAC-Wilford & McKay’s ability to board vessels on the Atlantic side of the Panama Canal is highly limited while authorities confront social unrest and criminal activity. A skeleton staff is being maintained at our Cristobal office.

So far, Panama Canal traffic has not been delayed at a result of the unrest.

Updates on the situation will be given as they develop over the next 24 hours.
