Bayport Ship Channel restrictions

Based on a hydrographic survey conducted by the Army Corps of Engineers on 9/28, Houston Pilots is imposing the following operational restriction for ships transiting in and out of Bayport.

Effective immediately, all vessels transiting to/from Bayport (sailings, arrivals, & shifts) with a draft greater than 35’ freshwater are required to have 2 tugs, at Pilots discretion. The tugs are to assist transiting vessels in safely making the turn into and out of the Bayport Ship Channel.

The shoaling in the south flare has not changed much since the last hydro survey (dated July 2016), with less than 40’ MLLW extending approximately 300’ north from Bayport Ship Channel B-3. However, the shoaling in the north flare continues to build. Minimum depth in the north flare is 36’ MLLW, with 2/3rds of the north flare at 37’ MLLW.

As dredging and surveying progresses in Bayport, Houston Pilots will look to modify or remove this restriction as soon as safely possible.
