Anchorage closed

25 Jun 2025 / Port Kembla, Australia

The anchorage off the coast of Port Kembla was closed at 1800 hours local time yesterday (24 June) due to severe weather (high swell and strong winds). All ships at anchor have been advised to make their way to further than 12NM from the coast until further notice, monitoring VHF channels 11 & 16.

A Gale Wing Warning has been issued for the Illawarra coast for today (25 June) with sustained winds gusts of more than 40 knots and a sharp increase in swell on Thursday. Pilots will assess shipping movements on a case-by-case basis for safe entry or removal of vessels during this period.

An emergency has been declared in the port due to adverse weather (high winds), with one ship requiring tug assistance due to broken mooring lines.

Ships already in port are required to drop their seaside anchor, run extra lines as necessary and contact VTS if further information is needed.

Shipping movements have been postponed until 1500 hours today and will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. VTS, Pilots and Harbour Master will assess conditions over the coming days to ensure the safety of the port is maintained.
