AMSA National Compliance Plan

29 Jul 2025 / Australia

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has shared its 2025-26 National Compliance Plan (NCP).

The plan details key compliance focus areas for the year. Informed by trends in safety, industry and expert input, the NCP uses a risk-based approach to regulation to address emerging and ongoing safety issues and so we can target our efforts where they are needed most.

Focus areas for 2025-26 include:

  • Risk-based inspections of foreign and Australian flagged vessels, focusing on maintenance, pilot ladder safety, cargo securing, and pollution prevention.
  • Seafarer safety and welfare under the Maritime Labour Convention, wage compliance and workplace risk assessments.
  • DCV safety, with priorities on fatigue management, safety management system (SMS) implementation, lithium-ion battery risks, hazardous gases, and lifejacket wear.
  • Safe towing and flood operations for emergency service vessels, with targeted education.
  • Support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander operators to strengthen SMS implementation and safe operations.
  • Joint inspections with WorkSafe targeting high-risk activities such as snorkelling and diving to improve safety outcomes.
