8.3-magnitude quake

Tsunami alerts were issued after a 8.3-magnitude earthquake hit central Chile at 19:54 local time (22:54 GMT) yesterday, 16 September.

The tremor was centred off the coast about 55km west of the city of Illapel. Five people are now known to have died, and one million residents have been evacuated from coastal areas. Waves of up to 4.5m were produced along the coast in the region of Coquimbo.

Officials said it was at the depth of about 10km. Several strong aftershocks were reported minutes after the initial quake.

The quake was strongly felt in some Argentine provinces, and tsunami alerts were also issued for Peru, Hawaii, parts of California and New Zealand.
