33% Navigation Service Charge increase postponed

A 33% increase in the Navigation Service Charge at the Port of Newcastle will not be implemented as planned on 1 January 2020. It will be delayed at least three months to allow all involved parties to discuss the issue, and the price increase will be held to 4% from 1 January to 31 March.

The port had initially announced that there would be an increase in the Navigation Service charge of 33% from A$0.7809 per GRT to A$1.0424 on 1 January. However, if the port user is willing to sign a binding Long Term Pricing Deed agreement, the increase on 1 January would only be 4%.

Objections were raised that this deed would lock the port user into a ten year agreement under with a minimum of 4% price increase each year, and provide no avenue of complaint in relation Navigation Service Charge increases. There were also concerns about the definition of “port user”.
