Official logistics provider moves yachts and equipment by land and sea for international sailing event

Muscat, Oman – The latest in the current Extreme Sailing Series 2015 has just concluded in Oman, and everything was in place thanks to GAC Pindar.

The yachting logistics specialist is the official logistics partner for the global series of events that pits the elite of competitive sailing against each other in a season that runs from February until December, at eight international locations around the world.

So while the performance of the Team GAC Pindar racing crew competing in the races in Muscat may be grabbing the headlines, GAC’s behind-the-scenes contribution to the success of the ESS is even greater. GAC Pindar has worked closely with local experts from GAC Oman to deliver the logistics and shipping expertise to transport the boats, equipment and infrastructure for the event in Muscat. It’s the same story at all the Series’ venues as it makes its way round the globe, with GAC Pindar working closely with local GAC professionals to ensure that every item is where it needs to be, when it needs to be there.

The latest leg of their journey was a long one - 3400 miles from the previous venue in Singapore. The GAC Pindar team are now preparing for a 3742 mile journey from Muscat to Qingdao in China, where the boats will convene next. GAC Pindar ships containers of up to 14 tons, two per team, containing the yacht, spares, and a full workshop for all contestants. The containers are moved by ocean and road to hit the venue a week prior to get customs and paperwork sorted.

GAC Group President Bengt Ekstrand, says: "The ESS provides a fitting challenge both for the skills of yachting professionals and for GAC as a logistics provider. Here in Oman we've witnessed a high-level of competitive skill both out on the water and behind the scenes. It's been an inspiring contest and GAC is determined to continue its long-standing relationship with the ESS organisers and racing teams in the years to come."

The Extreme Sailing Series is not only a truly world-class sporting event – it’s also an extremely complex operation from the logistics point of view. Every host country, or even port, comes with its own unique set of challenges, whether it’s providing safe storage for equipment in advance of race day or overcoming complex customs clearances requirements that vary from country to country. Meticulous planning is the key, as is the fact that we draw on the expertise and experience of our local teams at each location.

It’s a complex challenge, but one that Daniel Nordberg, General Manager – GAC Oman is confident of meeting.

"GAC is a world leader in the provision of integrated shipping, logistics and marine services, and one aspect of our business is logistics services tailored to the needs of the marine leisure industry," he says. "In 2011, GAC formed an alliance with professional sailing team, Team Pindar. Since then, GAC Pindar has been the official logistics services provider for the Extreme Sailing Series, taking care of all the logistics to ensure that events like this one in Muscat have everything needed delivered on time and in good shape.

"GAC’s support for the Extreme Sailing Series in Muscat is a great showcase for what we do best; leveraging the benefit of our specialist expertise and capabilities in a specialised industry - in this case, the sports, events and marine leisure industry - combined with our truly global network to deliver a world-class logistics solution that is tailored precisely to the needs of our customer."

On the water, Team GAC Pindar’s sailors are ready for a competitive season that will last for months. But more importantly, GAC Pindar has been working tirelessly to ensure that the Muscat meet is flawless for all competitors, and that everyone moves safely through the global itinerary that stretches ahead, boats and all.
