Gibraltar at a glance

Small, but powerful

Sitting at the gateway between the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean, Gibraltar has served as a meeting point for diverse cultures, a trading centre for merchants, and a haven for seafarers from around the globe for centuries.

So said the territory’s Minister for Business, Tourism and the Port, Vijay Daryanani, at the opening of Maritime Week Gibraltar last month. Held every two years and hosted by HM Government of Gibraltar, Gibraltar Port Authority, Gibraltar Maritime Administration and the University of Gibraltar Maritime Academy, it is one of southern Europe’s most important maritime events. And you can be sure that GAC representatives from Gibraltar, Spain and further afield joined shipping professionals from around the world to make the most of its networking opportunities.

The territory’s maritime significance far outreaches its size - just 6.7 km² at the southern tip of the Iberian peninsula. Thanks to its strategic location, it is the top bunkering port in the Mediterranean, and an important stopping point for vessels seeking repairs, spares, crew changes and more.
