Four decades at the forefront

In its 40th anniversary year, GAC India looks back at its history whilst keeping a keen eye on what awaits the team in the future.

Since its foundation in June 1983, GAC’s operation in the world’s fifth-largest economy have grown year-on-year to now offer comprehensive shipping and logistics support across all the nation’s ports. With a team of more than 400 professionals spread across 28 offices, GAC India is now a shining example of the best that GAC has to offer.

Growing global role
India plays a critical role in the global supply chain, and it’s one which is set to grow as New Delhi seeks to bolster the country’s port infrastructure in the coming years. The country handles a wide range of vessel types and moves almost all cargo types, from oil & gas products, coal and steel to fast-moving consumer goods. That diversification is key to India to become a major global hub for shipping and logistics.

GAC India’s Managing Director Ravi Ramachandran says the company’s extensive nationwide presence puts it in an ideal position to support the country’s drive to stake its claim.

“The ongoing infrastructure development in India presents significant opportunities for us,” he adds. “Planned improvements will enhance efficiency, reduce turnaround times and boost overall trade. As a leading player in the shipping and logistics industry, we support those developments by offering our expertise, integrated solutions, and deep understanding of local market dynamics.

“We are excited to contribute to the nation's progress and economic self-reliance and look forward to using the upgraded facilities to provide our customers with enhanced speed, reliability and efficiency.”

Customer-centric approach
Throughout its 40-year journey, GAC India has maintained an unwavering commitment to delivering value to its customers.

“Adaptability, resilience and agility have been key values that guided us through global challenges,” says Ravi. “We strengthened our relationships with suppliers, optimised our processes, and embraced innovative solutions to keep our operational efficiency and service quality at high levels.

“The experience highlighted the importance of proactive planning and collaboration, enhancing our responsiveness and preparedness for future challenges.”

Ahead of the curve
To optimise processes and ensure smooth, timely operations, GAC India invests strongly in its own systems and people. That spirit of self-improvement is what keeps it ahead of curve whilst collaborating with ports to deliver high quality service to its customers as India claims a growing role on the global stage.

India

Ports throughout the country have recognised GAC India for its contribution. In July this year, Dhamra Port hailed it as the steamer agent handling the second highest number of vessels. Haldia Dock Complex recognised GAC for handling the highest number of dry bulk and break-bulk cargo for 2022-2023 after two years in the No.2 spot, as well as by New Mangalore Port for handling the most chemical vessels as agents in 2022-23 - clear indications of the increased support from valued clients. The company was also named ‘Ship Agency of the Year’ at the ShipTek International Maritime Awards 2023 and ‘Best International Cruise Port Agent’ at the Aqua Cruise Awards.

Challenges and goals
Robust economic development and infrastructure projects present India’s logistics sector with immense opportunities for growth. However, those seeking to take those opportunities must also face the challenges of gaps in the infrastructure, regulatory complexities, and the need to optimise costs. This can only be done with innovative solutions and strategic partnerships – and GAC India has what it takes to provide end-to-end logistics solutions, including freight forwarding, transportation, inventory management, distribution and supply chain optimisation.

One of Ravi’s goals for the company is to further strengthen its position supporting the oil & gas industry, whilst also expanding into the renewable energy sector. To do so, GAC India will draw on its extensive experience and expertise, both in shipping support and in logistics services like warehousing, distribution, customs clearance and freight forwarding for offshore energy exploration.

“We aim to be a leading player in sustainable shipping, exploring innovative technologies and eco-friendly practices to minimise our environmental impact and contribute to a greener future,” he says.

Nurturing talent
GAC India’s achievements over the past four decades to become a leading provider of shipping and logistics support are testament to the joint efforts of the remarkable individuals that make up its workforce.

“We have always recognised the importance of nurturing talent, fostering a culture of excellence and creating a positive working environment to enable personal growth, collaboration and innovation for all members of our team,” says Ravi.

“We are always looking to innovate, expand our service offerings and adapt to market dynamics to further consolidate our position in the highly competitive India market.

By staying ahead of industry trends, anticipating customer needs, and nurturing our talent, we are confident in our ability to maintain our market leadership and drive sustained growth for the next 10 years and beyond.”
