Temporary establishment of acoustic monitors for ecological survey in the Brothers Marine Park and off Cheung Sok

27 Apr 2022 / Hong Kong

For approximately eight months, one acoustic monitor will be temporarily established on the seabed in the following locations (WGS 84 Datum):

(A) 22° 19.556’N 113° 58.746’E
(B) 22° 18.767’N 113° 59.025’E
(C) 22° 19.269’N 113° 59.748’E
(D) 22° 20.228’N 111° 01.560’E

The acoustic monitor is an instrument for collecting marine mammal data. It will be fixed to a metal frame structure of pyramid shape with a height of about 2 metre and a base of 1.0 metre by 1.0 metre on the seabed.

Laying of the acoustic monitor will be carried out by one workboat. One guard boat provides assistance. A working area of approximately 20 metres around the work boat is established.

The hours of work are from 0700 to 1900 hours from Monday to Saturday. No works are being carried out on Sundays and public holidays. Vessels employed for the works will not stay in the works locations outside the hours of work.

Diving operations for retrieving data from acoustic monitors will be carried out by work boat in the above locations from time to time.

Vessels engaged in the operations display signals as prescribed in international and local regulations.

Vessels navigating in the vicinity should proceed with caution and keep clear of the works locations at slow speed, bearing in mind that there are divers working in the locations.
