North Sea, Denmark & UK – 23 May 2014: GAC’s Per Thornblom and Gavin Johnston are dwarfed by a 9.2m diameter reel of flexible subsea pipes weighing in at just under 200t – just one of four that we recently moved from Kalundborg, Denmark, to Peterhead in Scotland for Bibby Offshore.
The reels were on their way to the Maersk Dumbarton field 140 miles north-east of Aberdeen, for which Bibby Offshore UK is providing support. But first, they had to be brought from Denmark to Scotland – and that’s where GAC came in.
Gavin, GAC UK’s Oil & Gas Hub Coordinator based at Aberdeen, worked closely with Per Thornblom, our Group Project Logistics Manager, to work out all the details to get the four monster reels and their 7t lifting beam delivered smoothly, safely and on time to meet the tight berthing schedule at Peterhead to rendezvous with the vessel that would deliver them to their final destination in the North Sea.
Ian Dickson, Forwarding Supervisor with GAC Logistics UK in Leith chartered the Heavy Lift Vessel ‘Anne-Sofie’ to bring the massive load from Denmark; GAC Project Logistics in Sweden provided all the technical support for the loading, stowage and lashing on board; and shipping colleagues in the UK and Denmark took care of agency services for the vessel at both ends of her voyage. The entire operation was overseen and coordinated by the Oil & Gas team in Aberdeen.
Last year, GAC signed a ship agency services contract covering all ports in the UK with Aberdeen-based Bibby Offshore UK Ltd, a subsidiary of the Bibby Line Group which provides solutions to the oil and gas sector in the North Sea.
Steve Gibson, GAC UK’s General Manager – Oil & Gas, says: "It’s very gratifying to see GAC colleagues working together in delivering a complex shipment end to end without incident. The Bibby Offshore management team were extremely pleased by our integrated approach and have confirmed that we shall be involved in other such moves in future."
