Overview

Panama is strategically located on the isthmus that links north and south America, and is home to the Panama Canal which allows shipping to pass from the Atlantic to the Pacific (and vice versa) without having to sailing around the southern tip of the continent. Control of the waterway passed from the USA to Panama in 1999, and toll revenue from transiting ships now pumps millions of dollars into the national economy and provides massive employment. Panama has the world's largest free trade zone, Colon Free Trade Zone, which has also been a major driver of growth.
